Unlimited Power – Anthony Robbins

Unlimited PowerI remember when Unlimited Power was first released back in 1986. I admit I was turned off. Who wants unlimited power? What is “power” anyway? A popular idea of “power” is the ability to push other people around — or push back!

Of course a title like Unlimited Power is controversial, incites interest, and helps sell a lot of books. Dan Kennedy says, “If you don’t offend somebody by noon each day, you’re not doing much.”

After reading Tony Robbins’ book, I understand he is promoting other ideas of power. The power he is talking about is the ability to take control of your own life and to become an agent for positive change in the world. Surely, this is the kind of power every one of his readers should be interested in having.

Tony Robbins seems like a natural leader. He’s an imposing six feet, four inches tall. The kind of guy you can look up to. His dynamic enthusiasm inspires people who attend his seminars to walk on hot coals! Tony Robbins uses fire walking as a metaphor for breaking your personal barriers.

In Unlimited Power, Tony presents skills that will be helpful for more successful living. He calls these skills Optimum Performance Technologies®. They are principally based on Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), which was developed by Richard Bandler and John Ginder.

Through NLP analysis, you learn to understand how you and others tend to process information. People tend to be visual (sight), auditory (sound), or kinesthetic (feeling). By determining what senses the individual favors, you can communicate ideas more effectively by addressing that system.

Tony explores several different ways to accelerate personal development and change, including conquering phobias and emotional scars. These techniques are largely devoted to controlling your state or emotional response to different situations. Some of the techniques include modeling (finding a role model to emulate), mental exercises to change associations, and anchoring (connecting a state to a physical action or other stimulus, something like Pavlov’s dog salivating when hearing a bell.)

He has used these techniques to help countless people improve their performance, including Olympic athletes, children in youth camps, adults at his seminars and workshops, and for accelerated military marksmanship training.

Unlimited Power isn’t intended to be light reading. It is a workbook that will be most valuable when you actually take the time to do the exercises and activities described. Considering the (paperback) book is 421 pages long, this will take considerable time and dedication. If you get the promised benefits, the effort will be worthwhile. Most people are more likely to get through the program by attending Tony’s live workshops.

Unlimited Power isn’t a crackpot exploration of pushing others around, but is a rational, practical course in accelerated human achievement.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

How To Win Friends & Influence PeopleWould you like to make more friends? Would you like to be able to persuade more people to your way of thinking? Would you like to be a better parent? A better salesperson? Then you will want to put How To Win Friends & Influence People on your annual reading list.

How To Win Friends & Influence People is one of the granddaddies of the self-help genre. Dale Carnegie first published the book in 1937. It has continued to be popular because of the always-appealing topic and because of Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc., the organization that perpetuates Dale Carnegie’s courses.

How To Win Friends & Influence People is an American non-fiction classic. But, when I gave a personal development seminar to a group of university accounting graduates, I only received blank stares when I asked if they had ever heard of the book.

When I was growing up, the first self-help book I can remember reading was my father’s yellow-paged copy of How To Win Friends & Influence People, and it’s message is as relevant today as it was when it was first published in 1937 and when I first read it during the 1960s.

Many years ago, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Carnegie Institute of Technology conducted investigations that found about 15 percent of one’s financial success is due to technical knowledge; 85 percent is due to skill in human engineering — personality and the ability to lead people.

Most universities do a fine job of teaching technical knowledge, but not many teach those critical “people skills”. That’s why many organizations continue to require their junior executives to complete the Dale Carnegie Course In Effective Speaking And Human Relations. You could think of the course as an executive finishing school. One of the textbooks for the course is How To Win Friends & Influence People.

This book isn’t based on dry theory, but on the experiences of students in Dale Carnegie’s courses who applied the ideas to find out what really works in more effective human relations. And many other things may have changed, but human nature hasn’t changed over all these years.

What is the principal message of this book? It’s basically to live the Golden Rule — “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” How do you do this? Through empathy. Take an interest in other people. Understand their interests and motives. Give them praise, encouragement and appreciation. Understand that one of the greatest human needs is to feel important.

This “you” focus instead of the “me” focus, of giving and incidentally receiving, is a way of life promoted in this book.

Dale Carnegie was a teacher of communication skills, and How To Win Friends & Influence People is a masterful piece of communication that is well worth studying. Dale Carnegie initially engages us in each chapter with questions and stories. He states the principle for the chapter. Then he gives examples, some from historic leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Charles Schwab (formerly the president of Bethlehem Steel), and some from students of the Carnegie courses throughout the world. The more recent editions of the book also include more contemporary examples. Finally, there is a one sentence “executive summary” at the end of each chapter and an “In A Nutshell” list of principles at the end of each section of the book.

Frank Bettger, author of How I Raised Myself From Failure To Success In Selling, was a student and dear friend of Dale Carnegie (who urged him to write his book.) Bettger used Carnegie’s format in writing his book with great success. (Maybe you can too!)

Dale Carnegie had a crisp, lively style that keeps you involved. You know that a human being wrote this book. And you feel that human being is talking directly to you.

So give yourself a treat with a big side benefit. Find yourself an easy chair and enjoy reading How To Win Friends & Influence People. Even better, sign yourself and your employees up for the Dale Carnegie Course In Effective Speaking and Human Relations. You will be paid back many times over through better human relations and more satisfied customers.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus

Men Are From Mars Women are From VenusAmazon.com Review
Relationship counselor John Gray focuses on the differences between men and women–men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, after all–and offers a simple solution: couples must acknowledge and accept these differences before they can develop happier relationships. In this unabridged version, Gray gives a spirited delivery of his message, especially when role-playing typical male/female interactions. Although it takes some time to adjust to his slightly nasal tone, the information is sound and gives both men and women helpful hints on improving themselves and their union. (Running time: 9.5 hours, 6 cassettes) –Sharon Griggins –This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

From Publishers Weekly
Psychotherapist Gray ( What You Feel You Can Heal ) adds to the growing number of self-help books that assess marital and relationship problems in terms of distinct and pervasive gender differences. Unfortunately, his overuse of gimmicky, often silly analogies and metaphors makes his otherwise down-to-earth guide hard to take seriously. Here Martians (men) play Mr. Fix-It while Venusians (women) run the Home-Improvement Committee; when upset, Martians “go to their caves” (to sort things out alone) while Venusians “go to the well” (for emotional cleansing). While graphically illustrative, the hyperbolic, overextended comparisons, particularly in the chapters that refer to men as rubber bands and women as waves, significantly detract from Gray’s realistic insights.

From Library Journal
Couples counselor Gray addresses the topic of male-female relationships with humor, insight, and understanding. Author of What You Feel , You Can Heal (Heart Pub., 1989), he offers practical advice on understanding the opposite sex and achieving satisfactory relationships. He argues that we must accept the fact that men and women have different values, communication styles, and intimate needs, then offers practical tips on avoiding painful arguments, asking for support, and communicating during difficult times. His “Venusian/Martian” phrase dictionary lists statements made by men and women and the ways in which they are often misinterpreted. Written in a light tone that keeps the reader’s interest, this is a very helpful source for couples trying to keep love alive. Recommended for self-help and therapy collections.

Blink – The Power of Thinking without Thinking

1. What is “Blink about?

BlinkIt’s a book about rapid cognition, about the kind of thinking that happens in a blink of an eye. When you meet someone for the first time, or walk into a house you are thinking of buying, or read the first few sentences of a book, your mind takes about two seconds to jump to a series of conclusions. Well, “Blink” is a book about those two seconds, because I think those instant conclusions that we reach are really powerful and really important and, occasionally, really good.

You could also say that it’s a book about intuition, except that I don’t like that word. In fact it never appears in “Blink.” Intuition strikes me as a concept we use to describe emotional reactions, gut feelings–thoughts and impressions that don’t seem entirely rational. But I think that what goes on in that first two seconds is perfectly rational. It’s thinking–its just thinking that moves a little faster and operates a little more mysteriously than the kind of deliberate, conscious decision-making that we usually associate with “thinking.” In “Blink” I’m trying to understand those two seconds. What is going on inside our heads when we engage in rapid cognition? When are snap judgments good and when are they not? What kinds of things can we do to make our powers of rapid cognition better?

2. How can thinking that takes place so quickly be at all useful? Don’t we make the best decisions when we take the time to carefully evaluate all available and relevant information?

Certainly that’s what we’ve always been told. We live in a society dedicated to the idea that we’re always better off gathering as much information and spending as much time as possible in deliberation. As children, this lesson is drummed into us again and again: haste makes waste, look before you leap, stop and think. But I don’t think this is true. There are lots of situations–particularly at times of high pressure and stress–when haste does not make waste, when our snap judgments and first impressions offer a much better means of making sense of the world.

One of the stories I tell in “Blink” is about the Emergency Room doctors at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. That’s the big public hospital in Chicago, and a few years ago they changed the way they diagnosed heart attacks. They instructed their doctors to gather less information on their patients: they encouraged them to zero in on just a few critical pieces of information about patients suffering from chest pain–like blood pressure and the ECG–while ignoring everything else, like the patient’s age and weight and medical history. And what happened? Cook County is now one of the best places in the United States at diagnosing chest pain.

Not surprisingly, it was really hard to convince the physicians at Cook County to go along with the plan, because, like all of us, they were committed to the idea that more information is always better. But I describe lots of cases in “Blink” where that simply isn’t true. There’s a wonderful phrase in psychology–”the power of thin slicing”–which says that as human beings we are capable of making sense of situations based on the thinnest slice of experience. I have an entire chapter in “Blink” on how unbelievably powerful our thin-slicing skills are. I have to say that I still find some of the examples in that chapter hard to believe.

3. Where did you get the idea for “Blink”?

Believe it or not, it’s because I decided, a few years ago, to grow my hair long. If you look at the author photo on my last book, “The Tipping Point,” you’ll see that it used to be cut very short and conservatively. But, on a whim, I let it grow wild, as it had been when I was teenager. Immediately, in very small but significant ways, my life changed. I started getting speeding tickets all the time–and I had never gotten any before. I started getting pulled out of airport security lines for special attention. And one day, while walking along 14th Street in downtown Manhattan, a police van pulled up on the sidewalk, and three officers jumped out. They were looking, it turned out, for a rapist, and the rapist, they said, looked a lot like me. They pulled out the sketch and the description. I looked at it, and pointed out to them as nicely as I could that in fact the rapist looked nothing at all like me. He was much taller, and much heavier, and about fifteen years younger (and, I added, in a largely futile attempt at humor, not nearly as good-looking.) All we had in common was a large head of curly hair. After twenty minutes or so, the officers finally agreed with me, and let me go. On a scale of things, I realize this was a trivial misunderstanding. African-Americans in the United State suffer indignities far worse than this all the time. But what struck me was how even more subtle and absurd the stereotyping was in my case: this wasn’t about something really obvious like skin color, or age, or height, or weight. It was just about hair. Something about the first impression created by my hair derailed every other consideration in the hunt for the rapist, and the impression formed in those first two seconds exerted a powerful hold over the officers’ thinking over the next twenty minutes. That episode on the street got me thinking about the weird power of first impressions.

4. But that’s an example of a bad case of thin-slicing. The police officers jumped to a conclusion about you that was wrong. Does “Blink” talk about when rapid cognition goes awry?

Yes. That’s a big part of the book as well. I’m very interested in figuring out those kinds of situations where we need to be careful with our powers of rapid cognition. For instance, I have a chapter where I talk a lot about what it means for a man to be tall. I called up several hundred of the Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. and asked them how tall their CEOs were. And the answer is that they are almost all tall. Now that’s weird. There is no correlation between height and intelligence, or height and judgment, or height and the ability to motivate and lead people. But for some reason corporations overwhelmingly choose tall people for leadership roles. I think that’s an example of bad rapid cognition: there is something going on in the first few seconds of meeting a tall person which makes us predisposed toward thinking of that person as an effective leader, the same way that the police looked at my hair and decided I resembled a criminal. I call this the “Warren Harding Error” (you’ll have to read “Blink” to figure out why), and I think we make Warren Harding Errors in all kind of situations– particularly when it comes to hiring. With “Blink,” I’m trying to help people distinguish their good rapid cognition from their bad rapid cognition.

5. What kind of a book is “Blink”?

I used to get that question all the time with “The Tipping Point,” and I never really had a good answer. The best I could come up with was to say that it was an intellectual adventure story. I would describe “Blink” the same way. There is a lot of psychology in this book. In fact, the core of the book is research from a very new and quite extraordinary field in psychology that hasn’t really been written about yet for a general audience. But those ideas are illustrated using stories from literally every corner of society. In just the first four chapters, I discuss, among other things: marriage, World War Two code-breaking, ancient Greek sculpture, New Jersey’s best car dealer, Tom Hanks, speed-dating, medical malpractice, how to hit a topspin forehand, and what you can learn from someone by looking around their bedroom. So what does that make “Blink?” Fun, I hope.

6. What do you want people to take away from “Blink”?

I guess I just want to get people to take rapid cognition seriously. When it comes to something like dating, we all readily admit to the importance of what happens in the first instant when two people meet. But we won’t admit to the importance of what happens in the first two seconds when we talk about what happens when someone encounters a new idea, or when we interview someone for a job, or when a military general has to make a decision in the heat of battle.

“The Tipping Point” was concerned with grand themes, with figuring out the rules by which social change happens. “Blink” is quite different. It is concerned with the smallest components of our everyday lives–with the content and origin of those instantaneous impressions and conclusions that bubble up whenever we meet a new person, or confront a complex situation, or have to make a decision under conditions of stress. I think its time we paid more attention to those fleeting moments. I think that if we did, it would change the way wars are fought, the kind of products we see on the shelves, the kinds of movies that get made, the way police officers are trained, the way couples are counseled, the way job interviews are conducted and on and on–and if you combine all those little changes together you end up with a different and happier world.

Amazon.com Review

Blink is about the first two seconds of looking–the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of “thin slices” of behavior. The key is to rely on our “adaptive unconscious”–a 24/7 mental valet–that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea. Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us “mind blind,” focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to “the Warren Harding Effect” (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the “dark side of blink,” he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making. In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell’s ideas about what Blink Camp might look like. –Barbara Mackoff –This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Best-selling author Gladwell (The Tipping Point) has a dazzling ability to find commonality in disparate fields of study. As he displays again in this entertaining and illuminating look at how we make snap judgments—about people’s intentions, the authenticity of a work of art, even military strategy—he can parse for general readers the intricacies of fascinating but little-known fields like professional food tasting (why does Coke taste different from Pepsi?). Gladwell’s conclusion, after studying how people make instant decisions in a wide range of fields from psychology to police work, is that we can make better instant judgments by training our mind and senses to focus on the most relevant facts—and that less input (as long as it’s the right input) is better than more. Perhaps the most stunning example he gives of this counterintuitive truth is the most expensive war game ever conducted by the Pentagon, in which a wily marine officer, playing “a rogue military commander” in the Persian Gulf and unencumbered by hierarchy, bureaucracy and too much technology, humiliated American forces whose chiefs were bogged down in matrixes, systems for decision making and information overload. But if one sets aside Gladwell’s dazzle, some questions and apparent inconsistencies emerge. If doctors are given an algorithm, or formula, in which only four facts are needed to determine if a patient is having a heart attack, is that really educating the doctor’s decision-making ability—or is it taking the decision out of the doctor’s hands altogether and handing it over to the algorithm? Still, each case study is satisfying, and Gladwell imparts his own evident pleasure in delving into a wide range of fields and seeking an underlying truth.

The Science of Self-Confidence

Self-Confidence1All the people you know personally have some self-confidence. If they didn’t you wouldn’t know them. They wouldn’t be braving the daily world. They’d be hermits, or shut-ins, afraid to do anything.

Some self-confidence, in today’s world, isn’t really enough. What is? Abundant self-confidence. Think of all the things you could do if you enjoyed superior levels of self-confidence in all areas of life that are important to you. What would stop you? In this audio seminar, Brian Tracy provides a practical plan of action to developing self-confidence. You discover that it is a state of mind and set of attitudes that can be learned by using proven, practical methods and techniques practiced by winners and achievers in every field.

Dear Listener:

This is perhaps the most important program I have ever produced. The principles you learn here can change your life. As you discover how to develop unshakable levels of self-confidence, remarkable things happen.

I’ve researched and studied success for 25 years. I’ve finally found there are no “secrets of success.” No one is born with special qualities that assure long-term success and prosperity. There are, however, “special people” with goals, plans and the ability to move confidently in the direction of their dreams.

Confidence is the key!

Having a deep belief in your ability to achieve your goals–that’s the most important thing! The wonderful news about self-confidence: it is an attitude you can learn.

Session by session, you become more effective. Your self-image improves. Your self-esteem increases. Like building muscles, you systematically, purposefully build yourself to a superior level of confidence where you’re not afraid of anything.

My step-by-step system is based on power principles. Use them to become virtually unstoppable. Learn how to harness the power of purpose…align it with your core values…and achieve a deep, inner sense of strength.

By using these ideas and practicing these principles, everything becomes possible. Your belief in your ability to succeed in all areas of life becomes unshakable. Your life will never be the same, once you learn to practice The Science of Self-Confidence.

Sincerely,

Brian Tracy

5 out of 5 stars Million Dollar Habits, February 19, 2008
By Chuck Kimbriel (USA)
We make our habits and then our habits make us. This is an excellent book by Brian Tracy – I just picked it up at our local Borders and was happy to see that Tracy has another book out.Million Dollar Habits shows you how to develop and practice the habits that will make you successful…perhaps even a millonaire. Some of what Tracy covers here has been covered by Tracy in his prior books. But there is enough fresh material to make it interesting and worthwhie.I agree that Tracy is the very best of the personal development/success trainers (I hate to call these guys motivational speakers – sounds so temporary “motivational speakers” sort of like taking a hot shower) he combines wit with facts and has methods that deliver on their promises.I was initially turned off by Tracy pumping out book after book, but as I mentioned above, there is always enough new in his books to make it worthwhile.I would also recommend Goals: How To Get Everything You Want Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible and Create Your Own Future: How to MASTER the 12 Citical Factors of Unlimited Success.
5 out of 5 stars Another winner by the great Brian Tracy, February 19, 2008
By Cathy Brice (Southern California, USA)
I just picked up this book at our local BJ DALTONS and it is great. I have been a fan of the positive mind books for quite some time. Tracy goes beyond just positive thinking though and offers actual strategies that really work.

Tracy is an inspiration. I have also attended his seminars and have several of his tape programs.

This newest book by Tracy is somewhat like Coveys 7 Habits except that it is more than 7 habits. You can form good habits or bad habits. Tracy shows how to form the habits that lead to success; personal, financial, career and family.

I always enjoy reading Tracies material. He is as articulate a writer as he is a speaker.

Million Dollar Habits is a great read and I highly recommend it. Perhaps you too will become a millionaire with Million Dollar habits.

Ultimate Goals Program- How To Get Everything You Want Faster Than You Thought Possible

The Ultimate Goals Program

Fabulous! Great Advice you can Use!,

Brian’s advice on goals is really great and will help push you towards achieving your goals. I like how this CD is focused on the topic of goals and how to propel yourself towards your goals as fast as possible. He really knows what he’s talking about. His CD’s are always well-organized, practical, and based 100% on solid, practical real world experience. He gives a lot of strategies, so what I do is I listen to the whole thing and I pick a few things to apply to my life. Then later I listen again and apply a few more things. It’s probably too much for anyone to try to use all his advice at one time. The more I learn about business and success, the more I learn that Brian Tracy is 100% correct in everything he says.

I highly recommend getting EVERYTHING by Brian Tracy. It’s all great stuff. I also recommend books and CD’s by Napoleon Hill and Harv Eker.

What I like about Brian is that he has a lifetime of successful experience in the business world and only tells you things that are truly useful. He doesn’t waste your time with impractical drivel. I always say learn from the best, and Brian is one of the very best.

Best summary for success principles,

This is my very first review for a book. This book is such a great success book that I wanted to recommend this book to everyone. This is a much more refined version of Brian Tracy’s earlier work “The Psychology of Achievement” which I have heard numerous times.

I have read many books on success but this book really summarizes the best principles from all. It is a very practical and easy to follow book with action items after each topic. In fact there is so much in this book, that every time you read/listen to this book you will learn and be inspired to do something new and better. As Brian Tracy says, success can be learnt best from successful people. And he is a great example of a success.

The biggest thing I got from Brian Tracy’s books is that I am responsible for my own success. Rather than blaming people or circumstances, this book made me focus on doing things rather than staying in the blaming loop.

All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to be more successful in any aspect of their lives.

Like a race horse that’s just got blinker hoods… or someone who found the path in the woods…,

I listen to these CDs every day and I feel like a race horse who just got blinker hoods to focus on the goal, and the goal only. I’m a college student with relatively good grades who always had a wish to have a semester with straight As and get on the dean’s list (and I’m sure you have yours, whatever walk of life you’re coming from). But before that, I had this desire randomly coming up, then I forgot about it in the line of hectic days and weeks. After listening to the CDs, now (in mid-semester) I made it a goal, posted it on my room door, and I look at it every morning I leave and every night I go to bed. It’s a clear goal in front of my eyes every day and underneath it a couple of things to do to achieve it! The CDs gave me great ideas how to make it a reality. My biggest challenge was that there were so many distractions in my days that studying got pushed down on my daily to-do list, toward the end of the day, and when I sat down studying at 8 or 10 p.m., my brain just wasn’t as sharp, and most of the times I couldn’t finish the assignment for the next day. By listening to Brian Tracy, I learnt how to eliminate the distractions in my days or just to push them down on the daily list by rethinking my priorities. I made this straight A goal the #1 goal in my next few weeks and I’m doing great so far!

Anyway, buy the CDs, it’ll do wonders to your daily, monthly and yearly goal setting (especially if you have never done real goal setting before) and how to become a more focused, goal oriented person. It will even give you a new look on life, I swear! Good luck!

PS: I’ll let you know in June what happened to my semester goal… (:o)
Oh, and listen to the CDs every day, in your “dead” time… I listen to it while going to school/taking a bath, etc… when there isn’t much else to do anyway. And every day I hear something new on it I skipped the previous day…. It’s like a vitamin to take daily, or like a path in the forest… You know the way out is somewhere ahead of you, but you’re just walking randomly in the forest, and not even sure if you’re going to the right direction… With these CDs I just found the path…
